♥ July 20th-21st: Flamenco for bellydancers and Tribal Fusion ♥

This summer, we have invited Bellali Austria, an accomplished flamenco dancer and teacher from Mexico, to teach a flamenco workshop especially for Tribal bellydancers. As American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion bellydance evolved, they absorbed influences from many different dance forms. The beautiful posture and strong arm positions in Tribal are inspired by flamenco. Therefore, we want to give Tribal dancers a glimpse into this beautiful dance form, without having to stomp around in uncomfortable shoes!

About Bellali

Bellali has her dance training from Mexico and Spain, as well as having taught flamenco in Japan and here in Norway. Her passion for the abillity of dance to trancend cultural and language barriers has driven her to study many different dance forms, and to collaborate with dancers of diverse backgrounds.

Flamenco for bellydancers with Bellali

This workshop focuses on flamenco body technique, without shoes/tapping. We will explore the force and energy of flamenco to create movement, body percusssion, arm technique and turns to help us improve our projection on stage. You will learn technique and choreography which you are free to adapt to your own style of dancing.

• Time: Saturday and Sunday 11-12:30
• Level: some experience with ATS/Tribal fusion/bellydance recommended

Tribal Fusion technique and combinations with Miriam Embla

This workshop focuses on isolations and shimmies both standing in place and travelling. Then we’ll learn some challenging (but fun!) combinations that explore the use of lines, contrasting slow, gooey and percussive movements and layering isolations over footwork.

• Time: Saturday and Sunday 12:30-14
• Level: intermediate/some experience recommended

   Anouar Brahem is a Tunisian oud player and composer who is widely regarded as an innovator in his field. Performing for primarily a jazz audience, he fuses arabic classical music, folk music and jazz. In playing style, Anouar Brahem is often compared to Rabih Abou-Khalil, though his compositions tend to be more mellow and spare. He has collaborated throughout his career and on several albums with other musicians.

3. Atlantis Coastguard Corruption
   By Ugress
   Ugress is an electronic music project from Norway by musician Gisle Martens Meyer. Ugress often use small snippets (sampling) of audio from older science fiction or horror movies in their songs. The music can be related to other artists like Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Propellerheads and Röyksopp, however Ugress are known to have a “rougher” style.

   Magic Carpet was an innovative Anglo-Indian so-called psychedelic prog folk fusion band, that started in the early 1970s by three musical friends, Clem Alford (sitar), Jim Moyes (guitar), and Keshav Sathe (tabla). The Magic Carpet album has been described as “a psych folk gem – a unique and extraordinary fusion of east and west, Magic Carpet being one of the very first bands to truly combine Indian and western instrumentation”.

   Ganga was born in Port Fairy, Australia, and has gained the respect of Aboriginal didgeridu (yidaki) players for his unique approach to didgeridu playing. Influenced by many varied genres, including East Indian Tabla and African percussion, he has married indigenous Australian and world music with fat tribal beats and dirty funky bass lines to create a unique tribal-technological deep earth dance experience.

As we are now halfway through our winter ´13 classes, here is a little reminder that you can still drop in to the Monday evening Tribal Fusion class with Miriam Embla at Studio Orient from 17:30-18:30.

In this class we’ll sink our teeth into a different movement every Monday and drill that mo fo until we’re rocking it like Tribal Queens!

Get your drill on! Starting January 21st, 6 weeks of fun tribal fusion drills and short combinations featuring essential technique for the fusion dancer.

21. januar begynner et nytt 6 ukerskurs i tribal fusion teknikk og korte kombinasjoner med isolasjoner, sterke armer og mange repetisjoner til fengende musikk.

Tribal Fusion Open technique

Here is your chance to drill technique without having to worry about what the next move is! It takes many repetitions to ingrain movements into the muscle memory, this 6 week course will take you a bit closer. In this class, the most fundamental isolations are drilled at a pace that is adjusted to the general level of the students. Each class ends with a short combination utilising the movements covered in inventive ways.

Her får du anledning til å terpe på teknikk uten å måtte tenke på hva neste trinn er! Mange repetisjoner må til før en bevegelse sitter ordentlig i den muskulære hukommelsen, dette 6 ukers kurset vil ta deg et godt stykke på vei. De mest grunnleggende isolasjonene drilles i et tempo som tilpasses nivået på elevene. Til slutt setter vi bevgelsene sammen til en kort kombinasjon.
